What Does Board Certified Mean?

To be board certified, an ophthalmologist has taken and passed rigorous examinations, which cover all comprehensive aspects of medical and surgical eye care. For the patient, it is good to note that these examinations are voluntary by the ophthalmologist. He or she does not have to be board-certified to practice their profession.

The ABO (American Board of Ophthalmology) is the prevalent certifying body for ophthalmologists in the United States. Medical boards, including the ABO, have an accredited “umbrella” organization that sets the standards for physicians looking to be certified in their field.

For the consumer, certification is an added assurance that the surgeon has done everything to stay on top of his or her field. It also means the surgeon is willing to go the extra mile to insure the best possible service for the patient.
